Uncovering Nearly 40 Pounds of Fentanyl near NYC Day Care After Tragic Infant Fatality

Proximity to Day Care Raises Alarming Questions

In a distressing turn of events, law enforcement officers discovered an extensive stash of fentanyl, totaling nearly 40 pounds and valued at almost $1.5 million, mere blocks away from the New York City daycare where a 1-year-old child tragically lost their life due to fentanyl exposure.

DEA’s Revelations: Drug Mill Operating in Close Vicinity

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) revealed that the sizable fentanyl cache was found just six blocks away from the Divino Niño Daycare Center, where Nicholas Dominici, aged 1, along with two 2-year-old boys and an 8-month-old girl, were found unresponsive in the basement on September 15. DEA Special Agent in Charge Frank Tarentino expressed concern, stating, “The public outcry after the poisoning death of a toddler was not enough to stop a drug mill from operating just six blocks away from that Daycare.”

Major Trafficker Charged: Juan Gabriel Herrera Vargas in Custody

Juan Gabriel Herrera Vargas, 42, faces charges related to operating as a major trafficker, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and criminally using drug paraphernalia. Vargas, according to DEA officials, took dangerous actions by transporting over 40 pounds of fentanyl across the city and on the subway, displaying a blatant disregard for public safety.

Arrest and Seizure: Subway Chase Unfolds

DEA’s press release detailed a dramatic sequence of events leading to Vargas’s arrest. Law enforcement observed Vargas carrying a small black bag to the Kingsbridge Road subway station. Following him on his subway journey, authorities confronted him when he attempted to flee, leaving behind a suitcase containing 13 rectangular kilogram bricks suspected to be fentanyl. Subsequent to his arrest, Vargas was found carrying another suitcase, leading to the seizure of more suspected fentanyl packaged in 50,000 glassines.

Apartment Search Yields Disturbing Findings

Upon investigating Vargas’s Bronx apartment, law enforcement discovered alarming conditions, with windows covered in black plastic trash bags. The search unveiled one kilogram of fentanyl, six pounds of loose powder, 10,000 filled glassines, and various packing materials. The DEA highlighted that laboratory analysis results for the narcotics are pending.

Connected Arrests: Fentanyl Overdose at the Daycare

This discovery follows the arrests of Renny Antonio Parra Parades, Grei Mendez De Ventura, and neighbor Carlisto Acevedo Brito in connection to the fentanyl overdose incident at the daycare. Parra Paredes faces charges of conspiracy to distribute narcotics resulting in death. Daycare owner De Ventura and neighbor Brito were arrested and charged with conspiracy to distribute narcotics resulting in death and narcotics distribution resulting in death, carrying potential life sentences.

Pending Investigation: Lab Results Awaited

As investigations unfold, the DEA anticipates the results of laboratory analyses on the seized narcotics. The shocking proximity of the drug mill to the daycare adds a layer of urgency to comprehending the extent of the threat posed to the community.
